Upgrading Devices in High-Availability Mode

You can use the Web interface's Software Upgrade wizard to upgrade devices operating in High-Availability (HA) mode.

You can choose between two HA upgrade methods:

Non-Hitless Upgrade): In a Non-Hitless Upgrade, both the active and redundant devices are upgraded simultaneously. This method doesn't trigger an HA switchover, making it traffic-affecting and causing active calls to terminate during the upgrade process.

The upgrade process proceeds as follows:

a. The active device uploads the .cmp file.
b. The active device transfers the .cmp file to the redundant device.
c. Both devices install the file, save it to flash memory, and then restart.
Hitless Upgrade: A Hitless Upgrade updates both the active and redundant devices without disrupting traffic. It ensures ongoing calls are maintained using the HA switchover feature.

The upgrade process proceeds as follows:

a. The active device uploads the .cmp file.
b. The active device transfers the file to the redundant device.
c. The redundant device installs the file, saves it to flash memory, and then restarts, now running the new software version.
d. The redundant device initiates an HA switchover to become the new active device. Ongoing calls are uninterrupted and now processed by this device.
e. The previously active device (now redundant) installs the file, saves it to flash memory, and then restarts. Both devices now run the new software version.
f. The redundant device initiates an HA switchover to become the active device again. Only the initial redundant device restarts to resume redundant mode.
The software upgrade process, which includes a device restart, may take several minutes (even up to 30 minutes), depending on .cmp file version.
Hitless downgrade (i.e., to an earlier version) is not supported. For software downgrade, use the Non-Hitless upgrade.
Instead of upgrading through the Web interface, you can use the device's CLI:
Hitless Upgrade: # copy firmware from <URL and file name>
Non-Hitless Upgrade: # copy firmware from <URL and file name> non-hitless
Prior to upgrading your device, read the pre-upgrade recommendations in Recommendations Before Upgrading.
You can download the latest software version files from AudioCodes website (registered users only) at https://www.audiocodes.com/library/firmware.
The device cannot be configured during the upgrade.
You can cancel the upgrade process at any time before the restart stage begins, by clicking the dialog's close (X) button.
If the "SW version mismatch" message appears in the syslog or web interface after the upgrade, it indicates that the device's License Key doesn't support the new .cmp file version. In this case, contact AudioCodes Support for assistance.
If the device disconnects from power (power outage or power cable disconnected) during the upgrade, the upgrade process fails. When the device is powered up again, it falls back to the previously installed software version. This feature is configured by the [DisableDualImageFeature] parameter. The feature is applicable only to Mediant 800 Media Gateway & Enterprise Session Border Controller Hardware Revision C.
Instead of manually upgrading the device, you can use the device's Automatic Update feature for automatic provisioning (see Automatic Provisioning).
You can also upgrade the device by uploading the .cmp file from an external USB hard drive connected to the device's USB port. For more information, see USB Storage Capabilities.

The following procedure describes how to perform a Hitless upgrade.

To upgrade device in HA mode using Software Upgrade wizard:
1. Start the Software Upgrade wizard:
Toolbar: From the Actions drop-down menu, choose Software Upgrade.
Navigation tree: Setup menu > Administration tab > Maintenance folder > Software Upgrade.

The Software Upgrade page is displayed:

2. Click Start Software Upgrade; the wizard starts, prompting you to choose the software version file (.cmp):

3. Click Choose File, and then navigate to and select the .cmp file.
4. Choose the upgrade method:
For Non-Hitless upgrade: Click Upload File and Restart.
For Hitless upgrade: Click Upload File and Hitless Restart; the active device uploads the .cmp file, and then transfers it to the redundant device:

Once the active device uploads the file and transfers it to the redundant device, the redundant device saves the software to flash memory and then restarts to install the software.

When the redundant device completes the software upgrade, it initiates an HA switchover to become the active device, and now handles all the currently active calls (Stage 1/3):

The previously active device (now redundant) saves the file to flash memory, and then restarts to install the software.

When the currently redundant device (previously active) completes the software upgrade, it initiates an HA switchover to become the active device once again, and now handles all the currently active calls (Stage 2/3):

The active device then reconnects with the redundant device (Stage 3/3):

5. When the upgrade process completes, the Web Login page is displayed. Log in again to the device with your credentials.
